Types of network cable

The common types of network cable are: Coaxial cable; Unshielded twisted pair and Fibre optic.

What is network wiring?

Any transmission path used for information rather than power and in other words information in electronic form such as voice, video, audio, or any form of computer data.

What is Ethernet?

Most commonly used network protocol and its software enable computers and peripherals to communicate with each other, even if they are using different operating systems.

Can you run CAT-5e Ethernet cable outside?

CAT-5e cable is not rated for outdoor use, however in some occasions, it can be used and if so, we advise to run the cable through some kind of conduit to prevent moisture or lightning strike hitting it.

What does RJ mean?

RJ stands for Registered Jacks. These are telephone and data jacks that are registered with the FCC and are identified as RJ-11, RJ-45, etc.

What does Network Topology mean?

This is the geometric physical or electrical configuration describing a local communication network; the shape or arrangement of a system. The most common topologies are the bus, ring, and star.

Cable types

There are 4 types of cables, namely:

  • Communications Cable – primarily for telephone cable
  • Class 2 Cable – signalling cable primarily for data communications
  • Riser – vertical shaft used to route cable between floors
  • Plenum – Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) air return area, mainly drop ceilings.
