Two Way Radio FAQs

A frequency has to be programmed into a channel for the radio channel to work.

The PMR446 unlicensed radios are approved for operation within the UK and most of Europe.

There is no definitive answer as radio signals can be adversely affected by obstructions such as buildings or topography. It is advisable to carry out a site test prior to any purchase.

No, because they operate on a completely different frequency bandwidth.

Not unless a channel on your radio has been programmed with the same frequency.

Coverage can be enhanced by the installation of a Repeater Base Unit connected to an external antenna.

Some users require several frequencies e.g. construction sites, hotels, distribution centers and airports. Manufacturers therefore produce radios to accommodate all scenarios.

Network Cabling FAQs

The common types of network cable are: Coaxial cable; Unshielded twisted pair and Fibre optic.

Any transmission path used for information rather than power and in other words information in electronic form such as voice, video, audio, or any form of computer data.

Most commonly used network protocol and its software enable computers and peripherals to communicate with each other, even if they are using different operating systems.

Both Category 5 and Category 5e consist of unshielded twisted pair with 100 Ohm impedance and electrical characteristics supporting transmissions up to 100 MHz.

CAT-5e cable is not rated for outdoor use, however in some occasions, it can be used and if so, we advise to run the cable through some kind of conduit to prevent moisture or lightning strike hitting it.

RJ stands for Registered Jacks. These are telephone and data jacks that are registered with the FCC and are identified as RJ-11, RJ-45, etc.

This is the geometric physical or electrical configuration describing a local communication network; the shape or arrangement of a system. The most common topologies are the bus, ring, and star.

There are 4 types of cables, namely:

  • Communications Cable – primarily for telephone cable
  • Class 2 Cable – signalling cable primarily for data communications
  • Riser – vertical shaft used to route cable between floors
  • Plenum – Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) air return area, mainly drop ceilings.
