Case Study: Costain – Worle

Design, supply and install Cat6 LAN and Meeting Room Presentation Facilities (Audio Visual and Video Conferencing Technology Centre)

Costain Group Plc is a British Civil Engineering, Construction Company and Smart Technology service company from Headquarters in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

Costain projects are arranged over multiple sectors including, but not limited to: Natural Resources (water, waste, nuclear process, and oil & gas) and Infrastructure (highways, rail, power and airports).

The Challenge

Costain, the smart infrastructure solutions company, has opened a new technology centre in Worle, North Somerset, across 2 buildings within the same business park, which will develop and deliver technology solutions for clients in its key markets.

The Group has invested £3.5 million in the new centre which will be home to some 150 people, who will provide services to clients including solutions engineering, product development manufacturing and maintenance as well as digital systems integration.

As part of the new technology centre there was requirement for a cat6 LAN and meeting rooms facilities including video conferencing and presentation facilities across 6 meeting rooms and communal areas including Reception, Breakout areas and Café.

The Solution

Costain – Worle

Working with the client (Costain) and the Principle Contractor (Midas) we designed and installed two local area networks in each building consisting of circa 550 and 400 Cat6 CPR B2ca sockets all terminated back to 42U Server Cabinets. PatchSee Fibre cables with intelligent lighting were used for cabinet patching.

Meeting Room facilities were supported with commercial grade Sony Bravia 4K monitors in 55’’ and 65’’ sizes with Barco Clickshare for wireless presentation from mobile devices such as Laptop and Tablet.

Video Conferencing solutions were installed into each Meeting Room with 4K cameras.

Brightsign digital signage solutions were installed to support screens in communal areas such as Reception for looping relevant project data, news channels or used as welcome signage to arriving guests.Audio Visual Bravia Screen

A 55’’ Sony Bravia was also provided on a mobile media stand to support ad-hoc flexible meeting facilities with Barco Clickshare for wireless presentation from mobile devices.

Finally, we were asked to provide and install Digital FreeView TV aerials as a standalone media solution to the communal area screens such as the café in each building so that news channels could playback without going through the LAN thus reducing media traffic through the network.
